REOS Copperbonded Ground Rod Specifications

NO: A-11-2002

Material:

This technical information covers 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1" diameter REOS  copperbonded ground rods. Ground rods offered by REOS  are made of a solid steel core covered with a nickel strick and uniform copper coating. The copper is applied electrolytically, forming a metallurgical bond between the steel core and the copper. The steel core shall be cold drawn to ASTM A1080 AISI C1017. The copper coating shall be type DHP alloy #122 CDA to ASTM B-572.

Rod Characteristics:

With a glossy finish, free of imperfections, the copper layer is controlled and measured by the most technically advanced electronic measuring devices.  Copper Coating shall be continuous over the rod with the exception of pointed and chamfered end. Thickness of copper coatings offered range from 2.5 mil to 13 mil. UL requires 10 mil (0.010”) and REA requires 13 mil (0.013”). Standard copper plating thickness exceeds UL and ANSI specs of .010”. Copper exteriors, molecularly bonded to nickel-sealed high strength steel cores, exceed the requirements of ANSI/UL 467-1984 (ANSI C33.8-1972).

The rod diameter shall be ½ “, 5/8”, Ύ” and 1”. The average diameter for a ½” rod is .500”; for a 5/8” rod is .561”, for a Ύ inch rod .677” and for a 1” rod .910”

Standard pointed rods are conically pointed at one end 60 degrees, the other end is cut off square and chamfered.

Sectional Threaded Rods are roll- threaded to provide American Standard course thread requirements with a class 2 fit. One end provides a flat point, while the other end is chamfered.

REOS rods are commercially straight and shall meet the 10/1000" per linear foot specifications.

Copper is electrolytically applied to cold drawn steel bars using technically advanced electroplating equipment. The end result is a metallurgical bond of high quality and uniform thickness between the nickel, copper and steel. This insures a long corrosion-free life for REOS  ground rods.

To test adherence, an 18" length of steel rod with one end cut to a 45 degree point shall be driven between two steel clamping jaws of a vice set at 0.040" less than the diameter of the rod so as to shear off sufficient metal to expose the bond between the jacket and the rod. Peeling off the jacket by the jaws of the wire is acceptable, but there shall be no other evidence of separation of the jacket from the steel core.

There shall be no evidence of cracking of the jacket if, at room temperature, a length of the rod is rigidly held in a vice and the free end bent by applying force perpendicular to the rod at a distance from the clamping device equal to 40 times the diameter of the rod. The magnitude of the force and the direction of application shall be such that the rod is permanently bent through a 30 degree angle.

Tensile Strength:

Rods will have a tensile strength of more than  75,000 psi

Length:

Standard lengths are 5, 6, 8 or 10 feet plus Ό”, minus 0”. UL 476 requires for a ground rod to be at least 8 feet long to to be listed.

 Markings:

Each rod is imprinted within 12” of the top of the rod with: item number indicating rod diameter and the length as well as the UL logo (when listed).

  Packing:

Ground rods shall be packaged in bundles with reinforced tape or metal banding. Then they are bound securely in steel strapped master bundles.
